REDEMPTION
BY PRICE
Part 2
5-9-07
“You
are not your own: for you are bought with a price.”
1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.
ATTACKS have often been made upon the central doctrine
of the Gospel, namely, the doctrine of Redemption or Atonement,
for it is well-known to be the crux of the Gospel.
A. Called “the mercantile theory of Atonement.”
Within the idea of purchase lies hidden the essence of
the Savior’s work.
- An equivalent
was given, a possession was secured.
The fact is, the objection is not merely to the mercantile
expression—
B. Objection is to the very idea of Substitution and a
vicarious Sacrifice.
The gun is aimed at Christ’s bearing Divine Wrath
in our place
- We are
the costliest of creatures! We are dearest to God, for
He has spent most upon us and made us the choice objects
of His heavenly expenditure.
#1 We are redeemed from the curse of the law
#2 We are redeemed from the power of evil.
#3 We are redeemed from ourselves - not your own.
In one sense, you were bought from yourselves?
I. COMPENSATION
AND YET GAIN.
- Compensation - intended to make good on a loss to God
- Gain = your life that as lost is real life (transfer
from ourselves to Christ)
II. HIGH
VALUE AND YET LOWLINESS
* Value is clearly here, for we are bought with an immense
price.
1 Pe. 1:18-19
* We, should have the very lowest view of yourself, but
yet see how God has exalted you!
We should therefore keep our body clean!
* Our honor lies in our Owner!
III. This
brings before my mind SECURITY AND YET WATCHFULNESS.
A. Security… You will not be lost, because He who
owns you is able to keep you.
If you were to perish, who would be the loser? (The one
to whom we belong)
- Each believer cost Jesus his life's blood.
- See Him on the "tree" suffering & will
now lose you?
B. Watchfulness. “You are a King’s treasure.
(STEWARDSHIP)
- We are NOT the "Prodigal son" - far away…
we are HOME.
Watch so as to keep your garments white by walking close
to God, for “you are not your own: you are bought
with a price.”
IV. A fourth contrast, CONSECRATION AND YET PERFECT LIBERTY.
A. Consecration. You are, today, to dedicate yourself
wholly and entirely to the Lord because you are not partly
redeemed, but wholly redeemed. Rom 13:14
- Do you make any provision for the flesh?
- Do you keep back any faculty you possess from Christ?
Is not this a robbery of your Lord?
- What portion is it which is to be unconsecrated?
* Is it the body that you would pamper and indulge?
* You give Christ your loving heart, but reserve your
mind to yourself?
* Your time is included in the purchase, (redeemed 24/7)
B. Perfect liberty.
- When we are consecrated to God we experience perfect
liberty.
- Liberty to obey the directions of the Spirit.
1 Cor 7:39; Cor 8:9; 1 Cor 10:29
* It takes Mature believers to understand the liberty-
freedom in Christ.
"Liberty to sin is slavery, liberty from sin is freedom!"
V. contrast—SUBMISSION
AND EXPECTANCY.
A. Submission— God has a right to do whatever He
wills with you & me.
- If we must suffer pain week after week, He has a right
to lay us there and chasten us in every limb. "you
are not your own"
- If He decides to take money away toward poverty- "you
are not your own"
- Go to a country far away from family & friends-
Mission field…"you are not your own"
* We must cheerfully obey, for, “you are not your
own.”
B. Side by side with that comes expectancy.
- Do my children expect great things from me?
- DO you expect great things from your Father? Attitude!
You do not know what you may yet become.
When we understand by comparison…
1. The full price paid for us & that God took over
my life…
2. The high price paid for us & how it should humble
us…
3. We are secure in our minds so we keep a watchful eye
on our vessel…
4. So we consecrate ourselves to God & experience
true Liberty…
5. Keeping an attitude of submission while expecting God
to do great things in my life…
So 1 Cor.
6:13-20 reminds us…
1. The Body is NOT for fornication but for the Lord
2. Sex outside of marriage is WRONG
3. God is not against the body but for the body
4. God has an eternal purpose for our bodies…
- Raise your expectations as high as you will—God
means to do for you exceedingly above what you can ask
or even think!
- According to the riches of His Glory in Christ Jesus
He will show the greatness of His power in you that believe
in Jesus Christ!
- Blessed are the men, then, of whom it is true, “You
are not your own: for you are bought with a price.”
Now, I finish
with this question—“Are you your own, dear
Hearer?”
